In short: insulating the facade is worth it if the walls are cold in winter, heating is expensive or the facade needs updating anyway. Then insulation and a new look can be done in one go. An insulated house is warmer in winter, cooler in summer and cheaper to heat.
When is insulation worth it?
- Walls feel cold inside, and damp or mould appears in corners.
- The heating bill is high even though the heating works properly.
- The render is cracked or the cladding needs replacing.
- You're planning to paint the facade or re-clad it anyway.
The two most common solutions
- Rendered insulation: insulation boards are fixed to the wall and covered with render. Suits brick and panel houses well.
- Ventilated facade: on top of the insulation come a wind barrier, an air gap and cladding, such as timber boards. Especially suitable for wooden houses, as the wall can breathe.
What to keep in mind
- Windows and doors: with a thicker wall, plan how the windows meet the insulation. Sometimes it makes sense to replace the windows at the same time.
- Joints: heat escapes most easily at corners, the plinth and around windows. These need careful work.
- The right time: rendering is done in warm weather, usually from spring to autumn.
- Permit: if the look of the house changes, you may need to notify the municipality. Read more: when do you need a permit?
Frequently asked questions
How thick should the insulation be?
It depends on the wall and the house. During the inspection we'll look at what thickness makes sense for your home.
Is it worth insulating the roof too?
Yes, warm air rises and a lot of heat is lost through the roof. Sometimes it's best to start with the roof. See our roofing work.
Can I live in the house during insulation?
Yes, exterior work doesn't stop you living inside.
