In short: renovating a typical apartment bathroom usually takes 2–4 weeks. A simpler job where the layout stays the same can be done in two weeks. Replacing pipes, building a walk-in shower or changing the layout takes longer.
For example, we finished the Randvere bathroom from start to finish in two weeks.
Where does the time go?
- Demolition: 1–2 days. Old tiles, bath and toilet are removed.
- Pipes, electrics and ventilation: 2–4 days. Everything that goes inside walls and floor.
- Walls and floor: several days. Walls are straightened and the floor is sloped. The levelling compound must dry before moving on.
- Waterproofing: 2–3 days, as each layer must dry.
- Tiling and grouting: 3–6 days, depending on the room size and tiles.
- Basin, toilet, shower and lights: 1–3 days.
Why can't it be faster?
Much of the time is drying. Levelling compound and waterproofing need their time. Rushing can lead to cracks and leaks later. A good contractor doesn't skip drying time but works elsewhere meanwhile or plans ahead.
What can make it take longer?
- Surprises inside the wall: demolition sometimes reveals pipes or walls in worse condition than expected.
- Delivery times: some tiles, taps or shower screens take weeks to arrive. Choose them before work starts.
- Changing decisions: changing the layout mid-job adds time.
- Apartment association rules: noisy work may only be allowed at certain times. Read what to ask your association.
Frequently asked questions
Can I live at home during the renovation?
Yes, but the bathroom can't be used. If you have only one bathroom, arrange in advance where you can shower. See also how to live at home during a renovation.
When can work start?
It depends on our schedule. In Randvere we started two days after the first contact. You'll get an exact schedule with the quote.
Can I use the toilet during the renovation?
If the toilet is in the bathroom, usually not. Sometimes a temporary toilet can be put back at the end of each working day. Agree on this in advance.
