Distribution board with circuit breakers and wires

Blog · 24.08.2026

When should you replace an apartment's old wiring?

In older apartments the wiring is often decades old. When is it time to replace it, and why is it best done together with a renovation?

In short: Old wiring is worth replacing if fuses trip often, sockets get warm, there's no earthing or the wires are aluminium. It's best done at the start of a renovation, before filling and painting the walls. The work must be done by a qualified electrician.

In many Estonian apartments the wiring is as old as the building itself. It was once designed for a few lamps and a radio; today a hob, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, water heater and computers all run at once. Old wiring may not cope with that load.

Signs your wiring needs attention

  • breakers trip often
  • sockets or switches get warm
  • lights flicker when a large appliance starts
  • sockets have no earth
  • the wiring is aluminium
  • there are too few sockets and lots of extension leads in use

Why together with a renovation?

New cables are laid in channels cut into the walls. If this is done after the walls are painted, the fresh finish has to be broken again. That's why electrical work is best done at the start of a renovation, before filling and painting.

Think about where you need what

Rewiring is a good chance to put sockets and switches where you actually need them: above the kitchen worktop, next to the bed, behind the TV, in the hallway. At the same time you can plan new lighting – recessed spotlights, track lights or worktop lighting.

Distribution board and protection

Along with the wiring, it's worth checking the distribution board. A modern board with residual current protection improves safety, especially in the bathroom and kitchen.

Who can do electrical work?

Electrical work should be done by a qualified electrician. Don't let someone without the right skills and authorisation replace your wiring – it's a matter of both safety and insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Can wiring be replaced without a renovation?

Yes, but new wires go into channels cut into the wall. The walls then need repairing and repainting.

Is aluminium wiring dangerous?

Aluminium wire connections can loosen and heat up over time. That's one of the main reasons to replace the wiring.

Does the fuse board need replacing too?

It's worth checking. A modern board with a residual current device is much safer.
