Bathroom renovation step by step: what to expect

A bathroom renovation is one of the most complex jobs in a home. Here are the stages it consists of and what happens at each one.

In short: A bathroom renovation has six stages: inspection and plan, demolition, pipes and wiring, walls and waterproofing, tiling and finally basin, toilet and finishing. What matters most is what stays under the tiles.

The bathroom is the most complex room in a home: water, electricity, heating and ventilation all meet there. If any of them is done wrong, it only shows years later – usually as damp, mould or a stain on the neighbour's ceiling. That's why it's worth knowing what a bathroom renovation involves.

1. Site visit and plan

Before work starts, it's worth going over the room with the contractor. The room is measured and the condition of the pipes, electrics, ventilation and floor slopes is checked. This is also when you decide whether to keep a bathtub or go for a shower, where the washing machine goes and what lighting you want.

2. Demolition

Old tiles, fixtures, taps and, if needed, old pipes are removed. Demolition is often when you find out what's really behind the walls – which is why it's good to have a detailed quote from a contractor who has allowed for the usual surprises.

3. Pipes, electrics and ventilation

Before the surfaces are closed up, everything that goes inside the walls and floor is done: water and drain pipes, wiring, underfloor heating and ventilation. Changing these later is much harder and more expensive.

4. Surfaces and waterproofing

The walls are levelled and the floor gets the right slopes so water drains towards the floor drain. Then comes waterproofing – the layer that stops water seeping behind the tiles into the walls and floor. It's the most important part of a bathroom renovation, even though you can't see it in the finished room.

5. Tiling

Tiling gives the bathroom its look. The choice of tiles, the layout and even grout lines all matter. With large-format tiles, the substrate must be especially flat.

6. Fixtures and finishing

Finally the basin, toilet, shower or bathtub, taps, mirrors, lights and accessories are installed. Then the room is cleaned and handed over.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the bathroom and the scope of work. For example, we completed the Randvere bathroom from start to finish in two weeks. You'll get an exact schedule together with the quote.
