In short: Choose a company that is in the Business Register, shows its past work, visits before quoting and gives a detailed quote. Sign a written contract and avoid large prepayments. It's simplest when one team does all the work.
The success of a renovation depends largely on who does it. The cheapest quote isn't always the best, and the most expensive isn't necessarily the highest quality. Here are eight things to check before you decide.
1. Is the company registered?
Check the business register to make sure the company exists and is active. Its name, registry code and address should also be on its website.
2. Previous work
Ask for examples of past projects, ideally before-and-after photos. A good company is happy to show its work.
3. Reviews
Look at reviews on Google and other sites. A single bad review isn't necessarily a warning sign – what matters is how the company responded.
4. An on-site visit
A proper quote comes after the contractor has seen the room in person. A quote given over the phone from a description leaves room for surprises.
5. A detailed quote
The quote should list each job and material separately. Then you can see what's included and compare quotes more easily.
6. A written contract
The contract should state the scope of work, price, schedule and payment terms. Don't start a large job on a verbal agreement.
7. Payment terms
A large advance payment before work begins is risky. With us, you only pay once the work is done and checked.
8. One point of responsibility
If the tiler, plumber and electrician are from different companies, it's hard to say who's responsible when there's a problem. It's better when one team does the whole job under one contract.
